Never use pump without it being under water.  Sound from pump taking air is the last warning to add water to water tank for plants.
If pump makes sound you should dismantle it and clean the pump Filter and Rotor. If water has much dirt and they are not cleaned time to time pump can run slowly, make noise or even stop working.
